The Bank, the famous novelist and a night at the Royal Northern

Now I had been looking forward to the first event at the Manchester Literary Festival and I was not disappointed.*

The novelist Margaret Atwood was in conversation with writer and critic Alex Clark and I was there courtesy of Andrew Sutherland who is a Premier Relationship Manager at the HSBC and was kind enough to get me a ticket.

The Bank supports the Festival and as a customer who first walked out of one of their branches in 1969 with  an account I was happy to get to be part of the event.

And there are lots more including a host of novelist to listen to, and talk to and even a literary walk around some of the pubs of Manchester, spending "a pleasant afternoon rambling through the streets of Manchester while you learn about its literary heritage.

In this walking tour, expertly guided by Mancunian book lover Anne Beswick, you’ll hear about the many writers who have committed the metropolis to print, from our women of letters – Shelagh Delaney, Dodie Smith and Hilary Mantel – to our men – Anthony Burgess, Howard Jacobson and Walter Greenwood, among others. Come delve into the fascinating marginalia of the place that Benjamin Disraeli called ‘the most wonderful city of modern times.'"

Sadly today’s walk is fully booked but the repeat trip on Wednesday at 1pm looks still to have tickets and given the new pub book Peter and I are writing we may just in the inters of research pop along.

But if that doesn’t interest you there is much more which just leaves me to thank Andrew, and repeat how much I enjoyed the evening,

Location; Manchester
